August Message from the Director

Advisory Board Guides the Success of Ohio. Find It Here.

At the TourismOhio board meeting last week there was a positive feeling in the room. As board members provided updates during the “For the Good of Ohio” portion of the meeting, it was clear that tourism is having another strong season in Ohio.

We are using Ohio. Find It Here. to create a positive image of Ohio as a travel destination. Our TourismOhio team has been acting on the guidance received during past board meetings to expand into new markets, focus on the promotion of the Ohio Adventure Trails, and create partnerships to enhance our message. At last week’s meeting, we were pleased to report on our progress which included:

  • The Ohio. Find It Here. paid marketing campaign continues in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and has now expanded into Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
    • Ohio. Find It Here. commercials and digital ads began running in Indiana and West Virginia on March 26. On June 25 we added Louisville, Kentucky.
  • Social media engagement is up 239% compared to last summer. Ohio. Find It Here. has grown to attain more than 210,000 Facebook followers, 63,000 Instagram followers and 42,000 Twitter followers.
  • Ohio Adventure Trails have already reached more than 75 million people since promotions began in May. The most viewed trail is the Ohio Ice Cream Trail, reaching 42 million people.
  • TourismOhio has led media missions to New York, Indianapolis, Detroit, and this week to Pittsburgh.
  • Ohio. Find It Here. had a good presence at the Ohio State Fair including an “Adventure Trails” themed Development Services Agency/TourismOhio booth; Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Wines, and other partners using the Ohio. Find It Here. logo; and an Ohio. Find It Here. Showcase.
  • The 2018 Ohio Travel Guide was recognized as one of the top three state tourism division printed publications by the U.S. Travel Association.
  • The new Ohio. Find It Here. music (represented in 5 different genres) was played aloud and board members received packets containing a USB with the music files.

The TourismOhio Advisory board also offered good direction for the future of our campaign. Two of the most notable decisions made at the meeting included:

  • With the great success of this year’s Ohio Tourism Day, May 8, 2019, was chosen as the date for next year’s Ohio Tourism Day.
  • TourismOhio is planning for our “Fallidays” campaign which will start in early September. The campaign will continue the successful “trails” theme by focusing on the new “Ohio Buckeye Candy Trail”.

Also, during the meeting we bid farewell to outgoing board member Todd Mesek and thanked him for his five years of dedicated service. We wish him well as he makes the transition from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Ideastream.

The final 2018 meeting of the TourismOhio Advisory Board will be held on November 15 at the Ohio History Connection.

We greatly appreciate the direction of our TourismOhio Advisory Board which helps us carry out our mission to support Ohio’s tourism industry to drive economic prosperity throughout the state.

Best regards,

Matthew MacLaren, Esq.
