Behind-the-Scenes Tours

Factory tours are making a comeback, as people want to buy locally-made products and they want to see how they’re made. The Development Services Agency and TourismOhio were proud to once again participate in Manufacturing Day on October 6. Celebrated annually across the nation, Manufacturing Day recognizes modern manufacturing. Our staff toured Velvet Ice Cream in Utica, as well as Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland.

Family-owned Velvet Ice Cream started in the basement of a confectionary in Utica in 1924 and has since grown to employ 125 people and produce and distribute more than five million gallons of ice cream per year. More than 150,000 people visit Velvet’s manufacturing facility each year to enjoy fresh scoops and learn about the ice cream-making process.

Brothers Patrick and Daniel Conway opened Great Lakes Brewing Company in 1988. At the time, Great Lakes was the only business other than the West Side Market in Cleveland’s historic Ohio City. The brothers’ commitment to brewing exceptional beer revitalized the neighborhood, paving the way for others to bring business, jobs, and housing to the area which is now a Cleveland hot spot. Great Lakes produces more than 160,000 barrels of beer annually and distributes to thirteen states plus Washington, D.C.

If you're aware of a factory tour in your area, please email Juliana.Khusid@development.ohio.gov to let us know! We may be able to feature the tour in the future.
