Collecting in Clintonville
One savvy tidbit I’ve acquired as both a college student and two-time apartment renter, is not to underestimate the power of antique stores. Lucky for me, repositioning myself to the Clintonville area has given me a prime antique hunting position, for Clintonville is strewn with stores offering the gently used, vintage, and stylishly refurbished items from days gone by. Antique stores serve as hotspots for home décor as well as a lens into the past. Take a journey down High Street and back in time while venturing into the C-Ville’s best shops for collecting and decorating.
Eclectiques Antique Mall: Three levels of decor, furniture, and knick-knacks make this antique mall a treasure-filled time warp. As you walk down the aisles of consignment filled cubicles, items from the past sit waiting to be found anew. With a basement full of vintage furniture, and a tiny attic space full of kitschy kitchen gadgets, as well as an expansive main floor bursting with troves of trinkets, this is a one-stop-shop for lovers of the lost.
Boomerang Room: This retro retreat will take one back to shag rugs, fur coats, and Tang-colored sofas. It looks like a scene strait out of the blockbuster American Hustle. Chairs and couches, coats and Chuck Taylors; paintings and pastel plates, plastic playthings and political propaganda. These are only a few of the finds available in this psychedelic store.
Down Memory Lane: Cattycorner to Eclectiques Antique Mall is this collector’s gem. Everything in this store seems to have come from my great aunt’s farmhouse. Neglected novelties line shelves and tables, offering a nostalgic lens to simpler days.
Cottonwood Decor: Two doors down from Down Memory Lane sits this quaint box of treasures. Owner Phoebe Koehler fixes up many of the repurposed antiques found here while managing to maintain a vintage vibe. Displays change frequently, making this a go-to shop for gifts and décor home accessories.
Karen Wickliff Books: This bibliophile’s dream has too many books. Literally. Sure books line the countless shelves, but they also lay in sprawling stacks on the floor, on the windowsills, and on top of books on shelves. What perhaps sounds overwhelming only provides a perfect perusing haven. Don’t let the clutter fool you, each aisle and room has its own genre and the staff knows exactly where everything is. Let the world of long-lived literature take you chapters into the past.
Rag-O-Rama: Trendy vintage clothing seems like an oxymoron, but proves accurate at Rag-O-Rama. Clothing styles emanating days past are all the rage and are relatively cheap here. Keep watch for seasonal sales, which aim to purge last season’s donations to make room for the upcoming stock.
"Out with the old, in with the new" is no longer the motto as spring-cleaning rolls around. Instead, make room for more old and sample Clintonville's array of antiques.
